Solar tariff cut plan ruled legally flawed

Government plans to cut subsidies for solar panels on homes have been ruled legally flawed by the High Court. The government had said that subsidies for households that installed solar panels would be halved from 12 December. However, environmental charity Friends of the Earth and two solar companies went to court to test whether the proposals were lawful.

They argued that the cut-off point – which came two weeks before the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) consultation on changes to the scheme was due to end – was unlawful and that the lower subsidy could cost tens of thousands of jobs and bankrupt businesses, and had already led to unfinished or planned projects being abandoned. Further details can be found on BBC news.

However, in practical terms I cannot see this having a real effect on those who work in the industry or social landlord’s schemes. What is now emerging is a way forward for PV schemes at the 16.8p rate and here at Croftons, our  Social Housing & Green Energy Departments are working with a number of industry partners to make PV rent a roof schemes viable at the lower FiT rate.
